rws327-Wing Spars
Wing Spars  I started the Spars Feb 99
Rear Spar 1.

One of the rear spars in lightly clamped between the fence on my table and 2"x3/4" piece of melamine covered particle board, (it was scrap from another project, straight and stiff). Rear spars are 3 1/2 tall. "
Front Spar 1. Same thing, but this is one of the front spars, they are 6 3/16" tall.
Sanding the scarf joints for webbing. Sanding bevels for Scarf joints. Rear and front spar webbing staggered 1 1/2" and stacked. I used a belt sander to sand until the bevel was smooth. In this picture I wasn't quit done, all of the veneer lines should be straight and evenly spaced.
Stess relieved attach block. 3/4" 7 ply attach block. It is cut this way to relieve stress concentrations caused by square cut blocks. Root attach blocks are cut this way too.
Now is a good time to add the ply doublers to the un-webbed side of the front spars, don't do rear spars until the ribs are slid onto them. I also waited to double any of the spar webbing scarf joints until after the ribs were installed.
Lap jointed spar tips. Even though the tips as attached are plenty strong, I like this way better, since it adds no weight, that's how I did it.
It is not an illusion that the tip point is not center spar. I lowered the spar tips so that they were in line with the chord line, making the tip bows lay flat instead of being arched up.
Staples were removed and the tip pieces trimmed level with the top and bottom of the spar caps.
